Astragalus

General Information

Originally from China, astragalus has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. In the U.S., the plant became popular in the 80s. In fact, there are over 2,000 species of astragalus. However, these are the two related species Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus called mongholicus which are mainly used for medical purposes.

Common Name
astragalus, bei qi, huang qi, astragalus ascending

Scientific Name
Astragalus membranaceus, Astragalus mongholicus, Fabaceae (Leguminosae)

How does it work?

The root of the astragalus is usually used in soups, teas, extracts and capsules. Most of the time, astragalus is associated with other plants such as ginseng, angelica, and licorice.

Astragalus has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine, usually in combination with other herbs, to strengthen and stimulate the immune system. It is still used widely in China to treat chronic hepatitis and as adjuvant therapy against cancer.

This plant is also used for preventing and treating the common cold and upper respiratory tract infections.

Astragalus is also used against heart disease.

Data proving that it is possible to use the astragalus against a given health disorder are limited. The results of small preliminary studies indicate that astragalus may benefit heart function and may help the immune system to fight infections.

Some studies have shown the potential benefits of the use of astragalus - in combination with another herb, glossy privet flower (Ligustrum lucidum) as adjuvant therapy for cancer. In general, however, these studies were not well designed.

The NCCAM-funded investigators are studying the effects of astragalus on the body, especially on the immune system.

It is estimated that astragalus does not present a danger to most adults. Possible side effects are not known because astragalus is generally used in combination with other plants.

Astragalus may interact with drugs that inhibit the immune system, such as cyclophosphamide, a drug taken by patients with cancer and the same type of drug taken by people who have had organ transplants.

It is best to avoid using astragalus species that grow in the U.S., as "Oxytropis Lambert", since these species may have a different mode of action and other side effects.
